About this deal

Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Muska claims he wants to find Laputa because it's a threat to his country and world peace, but in truth he wants to take control of it to become the new ruler of the world. Two types, Lambda (ラムダ, Ramuda) and Sigma (シグマ, Shiguma) appeared as products of Nagata Heavy Industries. Break His Heart to Save Him: Sheeta makes a deal with Muska to free Pazu. It involves telling Pazu to return to his home town and forget about her, which he reluctantly does. Dola discusses this later. The Laputian population at that time was extremely technologically advanced, far beyond modern knowledge, hence Muska's obsession with the edifice. For example, the ancient people managed to build intelligent robots that could also fly. The robots also had no shortage of weapons. Apparently the residents had been at war, otherwise they would not have attached a cannon to Laputa. [8th] An alternative theory exposed by Lucita and Romuska at various points, was that Laputa was used as tool of domination, an apocalyptically powerful weapon would certainly help keep people below in line. In the control center, Muska, and presumably previous rulers, can access the high-technology electronic repository containing all of Laputa's secrets and knowledge, in turn contained within the modules, as well as control the robots, project his voice through loudspeakers throughout Laputa and make holograms appear. Since Muska can control the individual modules, he was able to dissolve the floor of the viewing platform and thus let the soldiers fall into the depths. The dome is criss-crossed with dark corridors, the walls of which have been carved in straight lines. Some of them are guarded by robots. Not far from the holocite crystal is the coronation hall. [8th]

Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Dola's speech to Pazu about him choosing to forget about Laputa and leaving Sheeta behind is enough to snap him out of his Heroic BSoD. Evil Plan: Muska wants to Take Over the World using Laputa as a Kill Sat. To this end he enlists a local military and kidnaps Sheeta so he can find and use the place. James, Caryn (August 18, 1989). The A.V. Club. Archived from the original on August 10, 2023 . Retrieved August 6, 2023. Not Quite Dead: The robot at the fortress is shot down and seems dead, but then it gets a second wind and gets up to destroy the entire place before finally being destroyed by cannon fire from Goliath. Disney Death: Dola and her crew are seemingly blown up by the Goliath, but are later shown to still be alive on Laputa, albeit captured by the military.

The royal coat of arms can be seen for the first time on Sheeta's flight stone. [4] Later, the coat of arms reappears in the film to mark elements of the plot (and so that Muska can find his way to the command center). The coat of arms appears on a combat robot that was stored in the Tedis fortress. On the city island, Muska discovered the entrance to the dome by scanning a wall for the coat of arms and then holding the flying stone in front of it. The General in the Japanese version definitely fits this trope. Ichiro Nagai was practically the go-to guy for hammy villains in his day. Hayao Miyazaki announces his return to Studio Ghibli". Wonderland. November 25, 2021. Archived from the original on January 27, 2022 . Retrieved April 10, 2022. Advanced Ancient Acropolis: Laputa is a relic of an earlier, more advanced civilization. There is only one robot still active and walking around in the city, at least until Muska activates A LOT more of them. The Social Darwinist: Muska, as he reveals in a Motive Rant, believes that he is a superior breed of humanity and must use Laputa's power to guide the stupid commoners.

Asshole Victim: Muska dropping all the soldiers who came with him to the floating city thousands of feet to their deaths is a ruthless betrayal, but it's hard to feel sorry for all those assholes. Solar Punk: The city of Laputa features hanging gardens and overgrowth that's reminiscent of the urban farming movement of the 21st century. These Robots are mechanical soldiers created by the inhabitants of the artificial floating country of Laputa. Non-Laputan science cannot even identify the materials that the Robots are made of. Mainichi Film Awards]. Mainichi Shimbun (in Japanese). Archived from the original on January 9, 2018 . Retrieved June 20, 2023.

Externally, the robots are constructed out of an extremely strong, dark armor. This is shown to be able to withstand large cannonballs, gunshots, and fiery temperatures. Grievous Bottley Harm: Sheeta smashes a champagne bottle over Muska's head at the beginning of the film. The Greatest Story Never Told: Implied in-universe at the ending. The entire military expedition sent to find Laputa was killed by Muska before they could report their discovery to their government and Laputa itself has relocated to the world's upper atmosphere, out of reach of humanity's current level of technology. The only survivors of the incident are Sheeta, Pazu, and the Dola Gang, who all agree that keeping Laputa's existence a secret from the rest of the world is for the best. Mark Hamill received critical praise for his performance of Muska in the 2003 English dub. [4] Character name Castle in the Sky". Rotten Tomatoes. Archived from the original on August 23, 2015 .
