About this deal

The high-definition 6" LCD touch screen perfectly integrated into the aluminum chassis of the DMP-A6 allows practical and ergonomic use. The user experience is intended to be as intuitive as possible. Thus, it is possible to access all player options and information through this beautiful interface. High speed SSD support

The DMP-A6 is compatible with most streaming services and you can get these playing with ease. Switching to the digital inputs is also easy from the internal menu system or the app. There is a new Bluetooth remote that has also been released, allowing for easier control when sat further away from the unit. You can also easily run your CD player or other digital transport into the DMP-A6 and take advantage of the exceptionally clean internal DAC and pre-amp circuits. It works very well as a digital hub for streaming and DAC duties and is excellent as part of a headphone system running it into an external headphone amplifier. The DMP-A6's DAC settings offer 7 filters applicable to your music listening preferences. In addition, custom VU meters are available for on-screen display itself built into a sturdy, modern-looking aluminum chassis. Smart control app Eversolo gives us XLR and RCA analog outputs which are selectable via software. This is handy for those with desktop systems where one output feeds a headphone amplifier, the other goes to active speakers, and the user can choose which one (or both) is live at any given time. On the digital input side, we get RCA, Toslink, USB, and Bluetooth with support for aptX HD and LDAC among others. It’s not quite the largest array of inputs you’ll find on a device of this size, but likely adequate for the needs of most users even if this was purely a “traditional” DAC.The audio decoding of the DMP-A6 Master Edition is entrusted to two ESS ES9038 Q2M DAC chips, a high-performance model widely recognized by audiophiles. It also supports high-resolution audio streams up to PCM 32bit 768kHz and DSD512, as well as decoding of MQA files. LCD Touch Screen The Bluetooth 5.0 reception of the DMP-A6 uses a Qualcomm QCC5125 chip. This supports the SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD and LDAC high-definition transmission codecs, allowing you to enjoy high-quality sound reproduction via Bluetooth.

So — do you want the good news or the bad news? Let’s start with the bad: I will no longer be making a follow-up video (as orginally planned) on the FiiO R7 streaming DAC / headphone amplifier. Well, not quite. This brings us to the good news: I’m handing off the FiiO follow-up video’s timeslot to China’s Zidoo to talk about its similarly-priced streaming DAC, the Eversolo DMP-A6 (€859), which will in turn feature a side-by-side comparison with the FiiO R7.

Firmware Updating

This unit runs off a standard IEC cable, but the internal switch-mode power supply has a few tweaks to keep any mains noise at bay. This includes a choke filter alongside audio-grade components and it’s nice to see they didn’t forget the smaller details. I will say this right off the bat. I’ve heard a good amount of ES9038 DACs and I’ve come to the conclusion that designs with a really good implementation of a ES9038PRO or any ESS DAC will almost always have very little to no “Sabre Glare” that a lot of ESS DACs are known for in the audio community. That’s not to say that “Sabre Glare” is bad but that those who steer away from ESS DACs for that reason might want to give something like the DAC-Z8 a try.

The basic platform that underpins most Zidoo devices is more than up to the job of being a streamer so it should not be too much of a surprise to find that the Eversolo is similar to the Alpha players in terms of its core architecture. The platform is built around an ARM Cortex A55 processor and uses a customised Android 11 interface as the basic operating system. This is capable of reading content over a network or from an internal hard drive bay that supports drives up to two terabytes. No drive is supplied as standard in this instance. Firmware UpdatingSpeaking of firmware! The process to update is fairly easy, the only real issue I personally ran into was a USB drive to update the Z8 with. You have to use an exFAT formatted device which I had none on hand due to all my portable storage being too big to allow exFAT(outside of portable SSDs and I wasn’t formatting those). I happened to find an old 8gb SD card on a determined hunt for an old storage device so, I used that and an SDcard reader to update and it worked just fine. This means that when you select the lovely and fundamentally honest Heads I Win, Tails You Lose by Olli Brown, the Eversolo doesn’t embellish what’s going on. All you get is an absurdly talented young bloke surrounded by musicians who know their instruments inside out. Every single one of them sounds exactly like they should; tonally correct and possessed of the scale and dimensions that they need to be something you don’t question. The utterly marvellous cover of No Diggerty is sumptuously ‘Hi-Fi’ without ever not being as much fun as it should be. The Eversolo DMP-A6 is a network audio streamer. We’ll cover the spec at length (and I’ll tell you now, it does a fair bit) but the most important thing to convey about the DMP-A6 is not what it is but what it isn’t. Eversolo is not a completely new company. It is a wing of Zidoo which has supplied a wide ranging set of components to us over the years. All of those devices; even the very audio orientated Neo S and Neo Alpha players, have video functionality built into their hardware. This is slightly niche but potentially very handy; if you want one box to handle everything, those two devices are extremely capable. With its audiophile-quality preamplifier, the Eversolo DMP-A8 streamer is designed to enhance all sources of a hi-fi installation. To do so, it features a wide range of connectors, with RCA and XLR inputs for connecting a pre-amplified turntable or a CD player. The AKM DAC can be used for your digital sources thanks to six inputs, including two coaxial, two optical and a USB-B port to use the DMP-A8 as a USB DAC with a computer. Finally, the HDMI ARC port allows you to connect a TV. As for outputs, there are several digital ports to connect an external DAC, as well as RCA and XLR outputs for perfect compatibility with any hi-fi or power amp. The Eversolo DMP-A8 preamplifier and DAC benefits from a wide range of connectors with analog and digital inputs to easily connect all your sources. Eversolo DMP-A8: the streaming king
