About this deal

The discussion of politics is prevalent but more from the Communist cast as they are almost unwittingly strangled out of existence by the predominantly faceless Nazis. Norris is a serial fabricant, incapable of facing or telling the truth about his business dealings, his past or his financial realities; he’s a really amusing character. This book was originally conceived as part of a longer novel, another section of which was made into the successful play and film, I am a Camera.

Having completed ophthalmology training in Yorkshire, he gained further fellowship experience in oculoplastic and orbital surgery both at St James’s Hospital in Leeds (Europe’s largest teaching hospital) and at the prestigious Corneo-Plastic unit in East Grinstead. In 1953, he fell in love with Don Bachardy, an eighteen-year-old college student born and raised in Los Angeles. When I went round to the flat that evening, I found him with Arthur in the dining-room, having just finished a substantial supper. I Am A Camera jumped immediately into my mind, but that of course is the adaptation into a play of Goodbye to Berlin.Isherwood wrote another novel, A Meeting by the River (1967), about two brothers, but he gave up writing fiction and turned entirely to autobiography.

US).He briefly attended medical school and progressed with his first two novels, All the Conspirators (1928) and The Memorial (1932). Isherwood's fictionalized account of life in Weimar Berlin is frequently combined with his later novel, Goodbye to Berlin in the single volume The Berlin Stories.

Hate exploded suddenly, without warning, out of nowhere; at street corners, in restaurants, cinemas, dance halls, swimming-baths; at midnight, after breakfast, in the middle of the afternoon. Signed by Beryl Cook on the title page to Victor Ross (1920- 2021) CEO of Readers Digest and a distinguished book collector. It seems that Norris has lived for some time in Germany but he also seems to have lived everywhere else. Norris’s fastidious oddness - the wearing of bizarre wigs and an obsessive attention to prinkings and powderings not usually found at that time openly engaged in by English men, certainly not in England, is typical of the Berlin experience – decadent, sophisticated and utterly unprovincial, which proved alluring about to those seeking a more colourful, even dangerous, European experience.

Full page colour frontispiece and Illustrated with 8 full page delightful colour plates all by Beryl Cook. He becomes involved with the Communists, along with one of the young men who run the girls that Norris employs to indulge his masochistic fantasies. Mr Norris is enjoyable as satire, and an interesting insight into a place and time that had such a profound impact on the 20 th century and beyond.

In 2017 he completed an MSc at Oxford University in Surgical Science and Practice for which he was awarded a Department for Continuing Education Scholarship. If you don’t want to give consent for this, we will still be able to get in touch with you about your enquiry. It’s probably best read along with its companion, Goodbye to Berlin, which contains the famous story of Sally Bowles.
