While it’s often sold as a mid-layer, where I think the Montane Allez Micro excels is as a winter baselayer, or a just-in-case standby.

Looking for a lightweight, multi-functional fleece that you can incorporate into your layering system this season? Why, well, I had one eye on the mountain running I’d be doing and having full length insulation layers running in varying climates and through the night would require something up to the task! If you want a high quality, warm and light base-layer for trail running or backpacking that adds flexibility by doubling as a mid layer, then you’d not go far wrong with the Montane Allez Hoody if you can afford it! The lightweight POLARTEC® Power Grid™ fabric with Aeroflyte Grid traps air next to the skin for extra insulation and allows moisture to move away from the skin during Aerobic activities. In winter, you're certainly not going to be wearing this outside on its own; likewise for cool summer nights, where a light insulated jacket would be a standard and sensible companion.We also reviewed it during some unseasonally cool spring walks, mainly in the chilly evening air, which it seemed well suited. Some sort of shell is often important, in cold, weather, to control evaporative rates and thus provide for some adjustment in heat and cooling. Glad there is an alternative, as Patagonia has a track record of ditching the very best pieces they produce. The Montane AMP, when worn on its own, is not quite as warm as the Odlo top and its face fabric has a pretty open-weave (whereas the Odlo provides some wind resistance via its tightly woven front panel), so the Montane AMP works best under a wind-resistant layer like an insulated jacket or inside a sleeping bag.
